Myths about Reading

Reading and writing go hand-in-hand.  As you increase your skills in one of these areas, you will likely find that your skill at the other improves as well.  Look at the following myths about reading and then check out the truth about the situation.

1)     “Good readers read quickly.” = FALSE

a.      The truth is that some good readers are able to read quickly, but others read very slowly.  The mark of a good reader is how much the person understands, not how quickly he or she reads.

2)     “It’s not important to read a text more than once.” = FALSE

a.      The truth is that reading a text more than once is a great habit to get into.  According to the Scholastic Reading website, reading twice or even three times, “fosters reading fluency, better recall of details, improved word recognition. Ultimately it builds students' self-confidence.   It will help students understand hard words, find ideas and information that they did not see the first time, help the story make sense and be more interesting, and make students better readers.”

3)     “I don’t have to think carefully about what I’m reading.” = FALSE

a.      The truth is that it’s very important to think as you read and interact with the text as you go.  Pause after each chapter or after each section of a textbook. Think about what you read and try to re-tell the information out loud to see how much you remember.  Re-telling is a great way to monitor how much you have learned.  If you can’t remember what you read, you haven’t learned it very well.  The point is NOT to memorize the exact words, but  to recall information in your own words about the people involved, the events that took place, when the events happened, and any other information that is needed to explain the information clearly to another person.

  1. I agree with all three myths. I am considered a quick reader however I'll catch myself not understanding a sentence and re-reading it until I fully understand what the story is about. Thinking is a good thing especially when reading either a fiction or a biography. It takes your brain to a whole another level when you being to read and comprehend what the author is trying to convey. You'll be blown away at the end of the book when you read between the lines.

    1. I agree with you 100% about being blown away at how much you will discover when you read between the lines!

    2. Same here; sometimes when I read a certain text to quickly I don't understand what I read and then I have to re-read it.

    3. Thanks guys! Glad that I'm not alone on this one :)

  2. i agree with #1, Reading is not about getting from cover to cover but to paint a mental picture about what the author is trying to portray. Maybe if people read any given information or even a book they'll understand it yes, but only retain it for that period of time. I also agree with #2, because personally i re-read things two maybe even three times just to wrap my mind around the idea or even a question on a test to better my understanding.

    1. I agree with you. It's not about how quickly you finish, it's about how much you learn. It's great that you are re-reading!

    1. English 43 is a writing-based course. We do a little reading, but mostly to help us with our writing skills and to provide content for the writing assignments.

For focused practice with reading, you should take English 42. :)

  4. “Good readers read quickly.” I actually heard this before in my english 42 class. And this is true, that it's false. I don't believe that they can read fast, but still catch the gist of what they're reading.

  6. “Good readers read quickly.” = FALSE

Yes, i agree its false because sometimes when you read fast you dont capture all the main points and important facts on what you have read. Well thats what happens to me lol. I need to read slow.

  7. “It’s not important to read a text more than once.” = FALSE

Same with this one. Sometimes to understand something better, its better when you re-read the text becuase you have a better chance to remembering.

  8. I agree with the first method. Years ago, I had a friend that read so quickly, he would go through several books a day, and comprehend everything he read. Not all readers can do this. You can take speed reading courses which, increase rates of reading without greatly reducing comprehension or retention. When I was in sixth grade, this was part of the English course curriculum at this time. April C.

    1. THat's true -- speed reading is a dying art. It's a very special skill and not many people can do it. It's best to read slowly and ingest the material carefully.

  9. It is more important to understand what you are reading because it improves your comprehension. Be patient on what your reading to be able to get proper information.

    1. I really enjoy reading and sometimes I can get stuck reading a book because I'm really into creativity. It helps my mind and expands it to a new horizon. It's fantastic.

  10. i disagree with the first one since i think that to be a good reader you have to analyze what you are reading to be able to understand the lecture. but that is just in my view.

  12. I agree that this myth “I don’t have to think carefully about what I’m reading.” is FALSE.

What works best for me is to always think about what i'm reading about. It helps me remember what i am reading about. If i just rush through the book i wont remember anything.

  13. this 3 myths are very so much true. i have can relate to the first one, i have learned that if i read slowy and carefully i can understand better and improve in my reading aswell.

  14. I always thought good readers read fast. I guess I was wrong.

  15. I agree with all 3 myths because all those answers are what i do when i read, i tend to read fast, dont think about what im reading, nor do i look back. Thats how your brain can get overwhelmed, you lose focus, and then have to do 2x more the work then you should. Just do the little things when doing a task and you should be fine. Cyrus I

  17. i was reading the last paragraph about "reading careully" and id say a little bit more carefully. i felt like theres more to it than understanding the text or information. how bout trying to relate to the text and put your self in the first person view instead of the 3rd. relating gives more to understanding and comprehension. if you relate to the text then retaining any information would be the least of your problems but explaining it to another person in your own systhesis.

  18. you can scan it first round, and then you will read it slowly word-by-word so you can understand or get what you read means...reading can't be fast or quick, you won't have any words into your head or mind...as for me, i read carefully, and even try to read it again...

  19. Doesn't the subject of a book have to do with being a good reader? Like in School when we had to read the books that where assigned to us? I got into the book Of Mice and Men rather then the dumb Siddhartha book. I understood of Mice and Men better because I got into the story.

  20. I also agree with all three myths, I always send texts and then re read them and half the time they dont make sense and then I have to waste time re writing it then I probably look like i cant spell.

  21. I totally agree with all three. My problem is I read fast and at the end of whatever I'm reading I don't even remember or understand what I just read. So reading it twice usually helps me to understand. I also agree with Brandon I have two sociology books I have to read from and most of the readings are so boring. I can't wrap my brain around sociology. But if you give me a book on war history I could read all day.

  22. I disagree with all of these methods. Everyone that reads usually has to come back to what they read to get a better understanding. Although some may be able to understand the first time, others can't
