- A politician tries to get your vote
- A lawyer tries to convince a jury
- An advertiser tries to get you to buy something
- A customer writes a review on Yelp to discuss the quality of a restaurant
Now, think about these three questions:
- What other times can you think of when an opinion is offered?
- If you were on a jury, what kind of evidence would the lawyers need to present in order to convince you?
- Do you look at reviews for restaurants before you try them? If so, what part of the review do you find the most compelling or important?
1. When given an opinion usual is followed by after an opinionated question if offered. Ie.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of my new hair? I dyed it brown the other day.
One's answer may suggest highlights as their opinion so their hair may look more nice.
2. Lawyers would have to present some hard darn evidence to persuade my beliefs depending on the case. I like visual evidence as well as written evidence. Anything through electronics I refuse to believe as well as another person's words. Those two can not be justified.
3. Going to a new restaurant I'm usually the spontaneous type and learn my lesson after, if the restaurant wasn't meeting my expectations. I look at others opinions of how they feel about the atmosphere and of course, how the food taste. A lot of reviewers would recommend delicious food so it makes me want to try.
Great start, Harrieth. I'm going to push you a little farther on some of these ideas --
Delete1. I'm not quite sure what you mean with the comment about highlights. This part is a little confusing for me: "When given an opinion usual is followed by after an opinionated question if offered." Can you explain more what you mean here?
2. Good idea, but what do you mean by "anthing through electronics." Can you be more specific? What about surveillance cameras? It's hard to argue with those, right?
3. I agree with you completely on #3! Great point!
I love that you attempted this post because it takes more critical thinking and effort than some of the other posts on the blog. I can tell that you are putting thought and effort into the course, which is great. I also want to help you develop your skills as much as possible, so I will continue to push you to develop your thougths and support them. This will make you well prepared for ENG 49.
Delete1. a teacher teaches their students about a certain subject.
ReplyDelete2.a lawyer needs facts and anything supporting their evidence to convice the judge.
Hi Jessica,
DeleteGood start, but I'm going to push your ideas a little farther here.
#1 - What do you mean by a "certain subject." Is chemistry an opinion?
#2 - Can you be more specific about "anything supporting their opinion"? What would convince you?
3.It depends i really go on the stars and what i would like to eat. Sometimes it is misleading, word of mouth is always good to go on too.
ReplyDeleteGreat point! You can't believe everything you read!
Deletei agree with you james. everybody is different and heres another outlook on the topic when deciding what to eat talk to people who share common tastebuds as you!
DeleteGreat point! Food is definitely a topic that people have differing opinions about based on their tastebuds!
Delete1. a time where the an opinion is needed could be when ever the state needs the public's opinion on new propositions, such as the vote on Prop 19 (legalize marijuana, which was defeated BTW..) or the time the state wanted to tax ciggarettes 1.50 extra so that more funding would go to medical research
ReplyDelete2. if a lawyer presents his case and i was one of the people to judge his case the evidence that i would need would be times, dates, real facts and statements. if he ever touch anything emotional then i would immediately disregard his defense. using emotions is an effective tactic to hook or lure people into feeling sorry for what ever the case was.
3. Honestly, i am open minded about going to restaurants not that picky about what i eat. i mean hey if your hungry your hungry right? the only thing that i can say to people is to watch out for how your food is handled, personally i work in the food business and it BUGGS me when people cant even wash their hands every now and then. peoples opinions about restaurants dont really matter to me, other peoples have different attitudes and cravings about where and what they eat.
Hi Patrick,
DeleteHere are the ideas that came to mind when I read your post.
#1 - This is a GREAT answer. It is detailed, specific, and clear.
#2 - Good point! What do you mean by "real facts," though?
#3 - Great point about how everyone's opinion is a little different when it comes to cravings for food.
Overall, this is well done! You show a lot of careful thought here! Nice work!
I still have trouble finding my own voice in my writing especially with topics that I have no interest in.
ReplyDeleteThat's a common issue that a lot of writers face, Chase! Sometimes you'll get lucky in school and you'll get to write about something that interests you. Other times, you won't and you'll have to make the best of it. As you practice more, your style and voice will begin to emerge more clearly. Hang in there!
Deletefor #2 i meant realm facts like;;; say i went to go eat lunch with michelle. a real fact would be i ate a chicken salad at daphnes greek cafe on west veiwpark way in the lunch court at 12;45 in the afternoon. or something like that
ReplyDeleteAh ha! Great! Those are the types of details that you can put in your paragraph too. The more specific, the better. Saying "i ate a chicken salad at daphnes greek cafe on west veiwpark way in the lunch court at 12;45 in the afternoon" is a lot more descriptive and interesting than saying "I ate lunch." :) Fantastic point here!
DeleteFor those who have not ever been to the tutoring lab, here is my experience from the other day, and hopefully you won’t be so shy, like me and go.
ReplyDeleteI was a bit reserved about going. The word “tutoring”, intimidated me. The workshop was about an hour long, and within that hour, I had a completely different opinion, of the tutoring lab.
The lab is more like friends getting to gather, helping you answer your questions, giving you some one-on-one help you might need. Nobody made you feel like you didn’t belong, because if your there, you’re there for a reason, and so is everyone else in the room. Stephanie was the teacher there that day, giving one-on-one help. It was a great opportunity to take advantage of, since we had a current assignment due. I worked on my project in the lab, and Stephanie gave me some great advice on what I should work on. Next, it was Ashley’s turn. She was the instructor, giving the outline workshop. We did some basic exercises to help sharpen our skills. Ashley walked around and helped everyone that needed some extra help. It was great having another set of eyes looking at you’re work, and giving you good advice.
If you don’t know or have never been to a Fred Preyor’s workshop; they‘re seminars you or your company might pay for, to help improve your writing skills, among other things. They can be very expensive, around $300.00; oh, and did I mention, they’re 8 hours long. Uggg! Going to a FREE lab with fantastic and professional teacher’s to help, along with getting extra credit for going, is well worth it. April C.
April,
DeleteThis is such a moving post! Thank you for sharing this! I was so touched by your comment that I forwarded it to the chair of the English Department. That person was so impressed that it was then forwared to the Dean, and the Dean forwarded it to the college's Vice President! They had nice compliments for you and for the lab. In a time when funding is hard to come by, it is these types of comments from students that help us keep the lab's doors open. I'm glad that you had a great experience! And, thank you so much for taking the time to share this comment with your fellow students.
Thank you very much. Now you're making me blush :-)I hope my punctuation and grammar were okay :0
DeleteFor #1 - What comes to my mind is when a car dealership is trying to sell their cars.
ReplyDeleteFor #2 - I believe in that rule of "innocent until proven guilty", so the lawyer would have to present hard evidence. I like paper work or video tape.
For #3 - I usually don't look at reviews. I like to try foods for my self, after i eat their food.
Great points! Buying a car is certainly a very important time to have an opinion. It's a big decision, and you are either stuck with the car or blessed with it for a long time to come.
ReplyDeleteMy act of human kindness today!
ReplyDeleteI was in Albertson picking some items. I was standing in line, as an elderly women with a walker approached the counter. The woman asked the cashier, “If someone could go across the street and get her a hamburger at McDonald’s”. She explained, “I would do it myself, but I have a hard time walking that far.” The cashier said “Nobody is here to help you with that.” I told the women if she waited just a moment, I would run across the street and get her one. A few minutes later I returned back to women, waiting on at the table in front of Albertson’s with meal. She offered me a $5.00 dollars for helping her. I told her to put her money away, I was happy to assist. All I wanted in return, was a smile, and for her to remember someone did something kind for her today. She started to cry.
I didn’t assist the woman for a reward. I did it because, we all need assistance ones in while, whether its school or everyday life. A helping hand is always nice when it comes around. Last year, my mother had open heart surgery, and she struggled with learning basic movements all over again. Helping those that can’t help themselves is reward in itself. April C.
