Successful Writing

Different situations require different types of writing.  Most of your classes will require academic writing (paragraphs and essays), but much of your communication at work will be in email form.  Writing outside of school is often less formal and structure.

Successful writers understand that there are MANY types of writing, and each type of writing has its place.  There are essays, paragraphs, textbook chapters, short stories, news articles, plays, poems, novels, song lyrics, emails, text messages, letters of complaint, or letters of appreciation, just to name a few.  If you think about the function of each of these types of writing, you can probably distinguish the purpose quite easily.

To be successful in writing, think about these three things:

1.      Audience – who will read my writing?
2.      Purpose – did I achieve the purpose of why I was writing?
3.      Did I follow the instructions from my teacher or boss (if any)?

To be successful, you should also think about writing as a process.  If you write the paragraph, print it out, and never look back at it, you aren’t following all the steps you can take to be successful.

Strong and successful writers often write, edit, re-write, edit, and re-write again.

  7. I was reading two inspiring stories on the news the other day about journal writing. One artist decided to call her project the “Happiness Project.” Every day for one year she wrote one sentences down in a journal of something that happened that day. Over the course of one year, she was able to go back and reflect one sentence at a time, Very creative.
The other artist did something similar, but he did his by video. Over the course of one year, he videotaped his life one second at a time. At the end of his project he was able show the world, what is life looks like, one second at a time and how important life is, even when we are just sitting around and doing nothing.
These two stories inspired me to start writing in my journal. Writing can be a great stress reliever to help get your thoughts out. April C.
