Here are the answers to the exercises on page 28. Review them carefully to make sure that you understand dependent-word fragments and how to correct them.
In each of these examples, the first sentence in the set shows the correction with the dependent word at the beginning of the sentence. When the dependent word is at the beginning, a comma is used.
In the second sentence, the dependent word comes in the middle of the sentence. In this case, no comma is used.
1) Because the movie was so violent, some
people left the theater.
Some people left the theater because the movie was so violent.
2) Before Martha stormed into the room,
everything was peaceful.
Everything was peaceful before Martha stormed into the room.
3) Unless the refrigerator is fixed soon, all
the food will spoil.
All the food will spoil unless the refrigerator is fixed soon.
4) While the crowd booed, the batter argued
with the umpire.
The batter argued with the umpire while the crowd booed.
5) When two guests began to argue, the
hostess moved the party outside.
The hostess moved the party outside when two guests began to
argue.
6) After he bought some donuts, Virgil hurried
to school.
Virgil hurried to school after he bought some donuts.
7) When we heard the crash in the kitchen,
we jumped up from the sofa.
We jumped up from the sofa when we heard the crash in the kitchen.
8) Although the car was totaled, the passengers
were unharmed.
The passengers were unharmed although the car was totaled.
9) Because of a leak in the water main, classes
ended early today.Classes ended early today because of a
leak in the water main.
In the last
sentence, “who” relates to the neighbor, so this one has to be done a little
differently. Check out the correction
for this one very carefully:
10) Our neighbor is a quiet man who works
as a nurse on the night shift.
Our neighbor, who is a quiet man, works as a nurse on the night shift.
This was a fun exercise. When Jessica was reviewing this in the workshop, it made it so much easier to stop those key words to help. April C.

ReplyDeleteI finished my Page 28 exercises. Even though I attend class I sometimes don't complete the answers but I am usually slow at things. I need to be careful with commas when writing.

ReplyDeleteThe parallel was one of the hardest assignment of the year. The complication of adding it to look the same was very hard.
ReplyDeletei agree with you! when doing the exercises i thought yay I'm ronde only just to realize i was wrong. that is why i always ask questions because i want to learn and understand my mistake. now I'm just hoping to do good in the final.
