Upcoming Workshops

Hey Guys,

Here are the workshops in I-122 for the next two weeks.  See if you can come to some of them!  Extra credit is available! :)

Tuesday, October 9th

Transitions

Giving your reader’s cues to guide them through your ideas can be very helpful. Transitional devices can help bridge ideas, sentences, and paragraphs together. There are many types of signals writers can use to help their reader along in making certain connections or assumptions. It is important for a reader to be able to recognize the directions. If your GPS says turn left are you going to veer right? Well, if the writer connects the paragraphs with the word conversely, do you think he going to talk about how these two ideas are similar? In this workshop, you will learn how to recognize the strategies behind transitional devices for better reading comprehension and practice using them for clearer connections in your own writing.

Wednesday, October 10th
3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Kristin Krogh
(Professor)
The Basics of Microsoft PowerPoint

Have you ever needed to make an interesting and eye-catching presentation for a school or work project, but don’t know how to start?  Microsoft PowerPoint offers some great features for making powerful and creative presentations.

This workshop will give you an overview of how to use many of the basic features of Microsoft PowerPoint.  The workshop will cover locating & opening the program, adding new slides, applying a background, choosing a font size and color, inserting animations, adding special features (photos, videos, and hyperlinks), rearranging slides, using spell check, and lastly, saving and viewing the presentation.

NOTE: There are only 20 computers available in the lab.  If there are more than 20 students present at the workshop, you will be asked to share the resources.

Tuesday, October 16th
1:00-2:00 p.m.
Marija
(Assistant Teacher)
Using Examples and Details

Have you ever had a composition returned to you with the comments “Please clarify” or “Explain” or “Provide details”? Has anyone ever read an email, text, blog entry, or Facebook post of yours and asked you to be clearer? We write to be understood, and good writers, whether in school or at work (or even online), make sure that readers don’t have questions of “Why?” or “How?” or “So what?” after reading their work. This workshop will teach you how to find and effectively use examples and clarifying details to improve your writing and make sure you are understood.

    1. If you want to check out the online resources for any of the workshops you missed, you can go to the tutoring lab website. Some materials should be posted soon if you click on 'help with reading' or 'help with writing' on the left-side menu bar.

  5. I just double checked the website Kristin sent out a few weeks ago on upcoming Labs. https://sites.google.com/site/miramarbasicskillslab/workshops
Today's lab is on Thesis Statements. If you're planning on taking United States History, World History classes, you will need to write a Thesis. This class would be very benefical for everyone, since those classes are a requirement.

The other class you should take is on Oct 31st. How to Write an Effective Resume. It is a tough job market out there, take trust me when I say, take the class, don't argue about, just do. In the past it may not have been so important, but today you need to learn to market yourself. The key words on a clean looking resume will help land that job. Personally, I have have rewritten my resume over 10 times and had it professional done, and it's not cheap to do this. April C.
